3. How we use personal data

  • provide account access, product search, diaries, reviews, and community features;
  • show public content according to the visibility you select;
  • moderate content, prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents;
  • respond to support requests and enforce our Terms of Service;
  • analyse product usage where analytics is enabled; and
  • meet legal obligations when they apply.

Where the GDPR applies, our usual legal bases are performance of a contract with you, our legitimate interests in operating and protecting Scanno, your consent where required, and compliance with legal obligations.

4. Public content and your choices

Reviews and profile information marked public can be viewed by other Scanno visitors. This may include your username, display name, avatar, review text, rating, verdict, product association, comments, and photos. Your private diary entries are not shown to other users unless you make them public.

Think carefully before posting: public content may be copied or shared by others outside Scanno. You can edit your profile and review content from Scanno where that feature is available, or contact us to request help.

5. Service providers and data sharing

We use service providers to run Scanno, including hosting and file storage providers.

  • DigitalOcean and infrastructure providers for hosting and operation;
  • S3-compatible storage operated for Scanno to store user-uploaded images;
  • PostHog for product analytics only when analytics is enabled; and
  • Open Food Facts to retrieve public product-catalogue information.

We do not sell personal data. We may disclose information when required by law, to protect Scanno or its users, or as part of a corporate transaction such as an acquisition.

6. Storage, security, and retention

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures intended to protect data. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so please use a strong and unique password.

We keep account information while your account is active and keep content for as long as needed to provide the service. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, diary, reviews, comments, and uploaded files. We retain user-created product records without their creator identity, and remove their uploaded product images. We may retain a limited amount of information where required for legal, security, fraud-prevention, or backup purposes.

Our providers may process data in countries other than yours. Where applicable, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.

7. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to processing, or receive a portable copy of your personal data. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time.

To make a request, follow the instructions on our Data Collection & Privacy Choices page or email us. You may also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Scanno develops. If changes are material, we will post the revised policy here and update its effective date.
